4G LTE and 4G VoLTE Differences

The mobile technologies like 2G, 3G, 4G are mainly concentrated only on data transmission i.e only on downloading and uploading of data only. Among three 4G gives high speed of data rate. It support only data transmission but not good quality voice services. Initially 4G supports less amount of data transmission while downloading or  uploading.

LTE – LTE stands for Long Term Evolution which is the technology used to achieve the 4G standards. It offers significantly higher internet speeds on cell phones and hand-held devices as compared to older communication standards such as 2G, 3G etc.

Usually these terms are used together as 4G LTE to denote high speed 4G services.


VoLTE – VoLTE or Voice over Long Term Evolution is a technology which lets you make cellular voice calls over the LTE network. It facilitates HD voice calls which means better call quality, faster call set-up etc.

To put it in a simple way,

1. LTE(4G) was originally developed only to support data(internet browsing, downloads, video call,etc.).
2. VoLTE(Voice over LTE), as the full name suggests, is an enabler for providing voice call feature over the LTE network.

 LTE is considered a technological evolution on both GSM and CDMA protocols which we are using from several years. Nowadays, LTE is fast becoming available across the globe and mobile Internet Service Providers are upgrading their networks from 3G to 4G. LTE is at present the fastest data transfer technology and soon it may become the most dominant among all the mobile Internet technologies which are being used.

VoLTE (Voice over LTE) VoLTE is a technology where simultaneously you can send voice and data over the network.So, we can say this is designed for both voice and data traffic. In LTE, if you make a voice call and you also keep your data connection on, the quality of voice will reduce. So, in order to make a good quality voice call, you will have to switch off data. In 3G, while you are making phone call, to preserve voice quality some phones will automatically stop data services.

But in case of VoLTE, the voice quality will not reduce even if your data connection is on. With VoLTE it is very easy to transmit telephone conversation over the data network. Compared to LTE ,VoLte has better advantages
